This month I chose to read Ivanka Trump’s Women Who Work: Rewriting The Rules For Success! It was a great read and really inspired me to put together a post all about my strategies for staying productive at the office throughout the day (and even throughout the week).

The President’s elder daughter is an excellent role model for women of all ages. As a successful businesswoman, entrepreneur and a mom to three young kids, Ivanka inspires many young professionals–especially women–all over the globe.

I read her first book The Trump Card a couple years ago, and was so excited when she debuted this one a number of months back. To this day I still keep a lot of what Ivanka has to say in mind, both on and off the job.

Write it down: Before I start anything work-related, I make sure to write it down. This is how I start any and every assignment or project because it really helps me to organize my thoughts. Plus, it’s great to have a physical record of everything tucked away safely in a notebook.

I also keep track of everything with the help of a weekly/monthly planner! Writing down my daily goals and plans really helps me stay on-track.

Organize your space: My ability to concentrate is severely diminished by a messy workspace. Whether I’m at home or at the office, I always keep everything in its spot.

Several times a day, I will take a few minutes to tidy up my space. This technique is definitely more effective than letting the space get super-messy and having to spend a half hour at a time getting all my things organized again.

Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water isn’t so much a rule for the office as it is a rule for life in general! I feel unstoppable when I am hydrated, and that is essential because I go from task to task often throughout the day. To stay alert and keep from crashing during the afternoon, I always carry a reusable water bottle with me, which brings me to my next piece of advice…

Ditch coffee: I’ve never been a coffee drinker. Instead, I go for green tea or other healthier forms of caffeine and energy. This helps me avoid distracting jitters while working, as well as crashing before the job is done.

Dress comfortably: Looking polished doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice comfort! There are so many timeless, gorgeous and–most of all–comfortable pieces on the market today. Recent trends and changes in style have also made it acceptable to wear comfier, more casual pieces as part of your everyday wardrobe. (Meaning certain sneakers look fashionable, as do baggy sweaters and slacks.)

At work, I tend to go for simple, relaxed pieces. Then, I add a few statement-making accessories or fun makeup to dress things up. I find that I am my most productive when my outfits are tidy and I am not distracted by how uncomfortable I feel. My go-to combos are high-rise cigarette jeans and a fitted t-shirt, or ankle-length slacks and a chunky knit sweater.

Take time away from screens: Even if tech helps you get the job done, don’t be afraid to step away from your phone, tablet and/or laptop/desktop during the day! As a PR professional, these digital tools play a huge factor in the work I do, but I understand that to be my most productive, I need to take regular breaks from them.

A few times per day, I’ll turn my computer to “sleep” mode, put my phone in a drawer, and do some work behind the camera or in a notebook. This always leaves me feeling refreshed and productive. I am definitely very lucky to have a dynamic career that allows me to be on my feet often, talking with clients and co-workers, and observing the daily operations of the company.

Collect inspo: This is especially important for those of you who, like me, work in a creative field. At work and at home, I love to keep tons of magazines and books for reference–I’ll even pull out the pages that really catch my eye and hang them on my bulletin board.

Collecting inspiration this way is great because it’s affordable and easy to change as needed. Plus, you have direct access to it throughout the day (and it is another productive activity that doesn’t involve screens)!

A busy schedule is something that takes some getting used to. Throughout college, as well as now, in my professional life, I was able to adapt to an on-the-go lifestyle with the help of a few necessities.

Finding the right products and the ones that worked perfectly for me and my life was a process that definitely took some trial and error.

To make it easier on other women, I decided to share my must-haves for a busy life here on Haute Mess! I truly believe that the secret to a happy life is a busy life.

Erin Condren LifePlanner: Staying organized is *so* important–and so much more so when you are always on the go! My LifePlanner helps me keep track of literally everything.

I looove that it has an overview of each month, as well as weekly spreads with room for more details. This setup is essential for me; I won’t ever buy a planner that is not in this format. LifePlanner also comes equipped with tons of useful stickers that help me on top of everything.

The best part? These guys are completely customizable. You will feel like you’re treating yourself when you order your personalized LifePlanner (but you won’t feel guilty because it’s something important that you will use day after day)!

Unlike planners from office supply stores or chains like Target, Erin Condren’s are top-quality, so they will actually last the entire year without getting worn and torn. The thick paper, durable covers and strong spirals are ah-mazing. Prices vary, Erin Condren

Pop & Suki Leather Notebook: When I say that I would be nowhere without my Leather Notebook, I mean it. I cannot do anything work-related without it. From brainstorm and creating lists to writing first drafts, I put it all in my P&S Leather Notebook.

I am really old-fashioned in that I just *have* to have everything written down. It helps me think more clearly and stay more organized in general. Plus, being able to physically cross something off my list is so satisfying and makes the task so much more rewarding. $40, Pop & Suki

Jao Refresher: Fellow Glossier Rep Amy Serrano introduced me to this product a couple months ago, and now I am a changed woman!

I used to be completely against hand sanitizers; not only are they extremely drying on the skin, they kill *all* germs–even the good ones.

But, when I began taking the train to and from work every day (while spending 8 hours in Manhattan in between), I quickly realized that I’d need to swallow my pride and pick one up.

Jao is a lot chicer than Purell, so I don’t mind keeping a larger one at my desk and a smaller one in my bag. Prices vary, Jao

Glossier Balm Dotcom: If you don’t have a bedside Balm, a vanity Balm, a car Balm and a purse Balm, what are you even doing? I’ve talked about this cult-favorite universal skin salve ad nauseam on here, so I am doing my best not to go to in-depth on here.

But, Balm Dotcom is hands-down the best lip balm I have ever used–and I’ve tried pretty much anything. Now, I don’t want to try anything else!

A little goes such a long way with this product, so one tube lasts forever. Plus, it is extremely long-wearing (even through intense workouts), which is a must for me and for anyone else who is super busy on the reg.

It comes in five yummy flavors, plus Original, which is unflavored. The Cherry and Rose flavors have a red and pink tint, respectively, while the Birthday flavor is un-tinted with a subtle holographic shimmer. I love them all. Currently in my bag? Coconut and Mint. $12, Glossier

Micellar wipes: Whether you are taking your makeup off, or you just need to refresh your face on-the-go, micellar wipes are a must!

I use Bioderma’s because that’s a brand I know I can trust. Sensible H2O Wipes are extremely saturated (so just one works wonders); they are spa-quality at an affordable price. $9.90, Beautylish

Facial spray: Soothe tired, irritated and dry skin easily and quickly with a facial spray! There are so many great options on the market.

You guys already know how much I love Mario Badescu’s Facial Spray with Aloe, Cucumber & Green Tea, as well as Lush’s Tea Tree Water toner. Because they both are available in multiple sizes, there is definitely one that will fit in your purse. Currently, I am keeping the smaller Tea Tree Water in mine because I know it has the power to fight all that NYC pollution and bacteria. $11-$23, Lush

Teeth whitening pen: This product is a godsend, so thank-you, Tarte! Not only is it vegan, it’s bleach-free, so it is gentle on teeth and actually protects the enamel.

Pearly Girl perfect for keeping in your bag post-lunch or post-gym (or post-wine). Don’t be that person brushing your teeth in a public bathroom. $22, Sephora

Glossier You Solid Perfume: We’re not in middle school anymore, so I forbid you all from keeping actual perfume bottles in your bag. Time to invest in a solid perfume like an adult.

Because I’m a Glossier Rep, I am way partial to You Solid; it smells exactly like the original You (only a bit stronger because it’s more concentrated), but it is much more travel-friendly. I love how the waxy formula melts into skin, leaving the clean, warm and sparkling scent behind all day long! $22, Glossier

Portable charger: Don’t get caught waiting for the train, the bus or an Uber without your phone! People hate on smartphones, but in my opinion they are necessary for safety and for life in general in 2018–especially if you rely on public transportation like I do.

I am all for leaving your phone in the hotel when you are on vacay or in your bag when you are out with friends, but during the work day, there is no question that it is an essential. So, invest in a portable charger if you are out of the house all day, every day!

This one from Free People easily slips into my smallest bags. (It’s also gorgeous.) $24, Free People

Sensible shoes: Don’t get me wrong–I love getting dressed up and wearing heels to work as much as the next 20-something. But oftentimes, I trade my heels for a sleek pair of sneakers or my Gucci loafers.

I’ve never been a ballet flats type of gal; I don’t like how they look at all, plus they’re not supportive and they do very little to shield your feet from the elements. That’s why I picked up a timeless pair of black Horsebit loafers from Gucci.

The style I chose can be worn as standard loafers, but the backs can also be folded down so that they become slippers. I love how versatile they are, and I know I will gave them forever.

Umbrella, sunglasses and other practical accessories: For me, accessorizing has always been about practicality, not fashion. But that doesn’t mean you can’t look good while being practical.

To avoid a major wardrobe malfunction (like being soaked to the core during an unsuspected rain shower on the way to work), I always keep an umbrella in my tote–particularly, my Little Brown Umbrella from Bloomingdale’s.

Other notable items? Sunglasses, of course, as well as a water bottle by S’well.

Moon Juice Power Dust: I picked this up during a recent sale at Free People on somewhat of a whim.

Moon Juice Beauty Dust and Sex Dust have been all over social media lately, so I’ve definitely been wanting to give the brand a try. Because I’ve never been a coffee drinker, I decided to go with Power Dust.

Basically, you empty a pouch (or two!) into water, tea or even pancake batter to reap the benefits. Power Dust has an interesting (but not unpleasant) taste. $35, Moon Juice

Lexi, the blogger behind Boho Chicken, inspired me to put together this guide for curating an efficient and chic bedside table with a post she did a few months back.

As she wrote, a bedside table is so much more important than most people realize! It truly is one of the most convenient places to keep the things you use (or should use) every day. And because it’s something you see every morning and night, you want the area to be aesthetically pleasing and a reminder of the things you love.

Getting organized is a common New Year’s resolution, so I thought, what better time to give you guys the tips and tricks I use for curating a neat and pretty space that fits just about everything I need.

You’ll need…

  1. A plain table: I like clean lines and neutral colors; to me this is the most relaxing. But for those of you who like a more decorative look, a simple table like this makes it easy to change up your space’s style whenever without having to buy new furniture. Check out local estate sales, antique stores and flea markets for unique and affordable pieces.
  2. Storage: Other than the table itself, the storage you choose is the most important aspect of curating your bedside! A small bin and a box or two really keep your table organized and optimize the small space.
  3. Light: Natural light and overhead lights are great, but I need all the light I can get to feel the most inspired and productive in my space. So, I like to keep a little lamp on my bedside table for reading and journaling.
  4. Candles & home fragrances: A good-smelling space is a must for me! I cannot fully relax unless I have a candle (or two!) lit (along with fresh sheets). My favs are Byredo’s Bohemia and Burning Rose, as well as Alex And Ani’s Scent 7. I also keep a ton of incense on hand at all times (I love, love, looove Dragon’s Blood).
  5. Beauty & wellness essentials: You definitely don’t need your entire contour kit or lipstick collection on hand, but there are a few things you can’t go without. For me that’s Glossier‘s Balm Dotcom, a trustworthy hand cream, as well as a small supply of sheet masks and/or eye patches. Every time I’m in L.A., I head to Make Asobi in Little Tokyo to stock up on a variety of authentic Asian sheet masks and other goodies. These guys are perfect because they don’t require any clean-up; you can go straight to sleep afterwards without making any mess at all. Dietary supplements, medication and any holistic remedies fit in this category, too.
  6. A small dish: Nothing makes me crazier than having a bunch of random jewelry cluttering up my bedside table; my favorite pieces can so easily get lost or damaged this way. So, I keep a small, pretty dish on my bedside table for the jewelry I take off before going to sleep.
  7. Reading material: This one is a no-brainer, or at least it should be! Whether you’re in school and have books to read as part of your coursework, or enjoy doing some reading on your own, it’s so important to do. There are so many benefits to reading before bed, and when the material is right in front of you day after day, I think you’re more likely to actually dive into it and stick with it. My current picks? Reading Sex And The City by Kim Akass and Janet McCabe, as well as Fashion-ology by Yuniya Kawamura.
  8. A journal: If journaling really isn’t your thing, you might be tempted to skip this one. But, a small notebook and a couple pens really help me feel organized, so I always like to have these supplies on hand. They’re especially useful when an idea comes to mind; it makes jotting it down before I forget a lot easier. I love, love, looove my personalized leather notebook from Pop & Suki; it makes me look forward to journaling nearly every day.
  9. Crystals: Not only are crystals gorgeous decorations, they provide your space with good vibes! These luxurious-looking natural wonders can help with everything from balance and focus to positivity to love. I keep rose quartz (love) and amethyst (relaxation) on my bedside table, and I also love having sage around for when I really need to cleanse my space’s aura.
  10. Inspo: Whatever inspires you, keep it front and center! For me this is my lifelong obsession with magazines and coffee table books. Right now I’ve got Literally Me by Julie Houts and the December 2017 edition of Vogue Paris (with Rihanna as guest editor).

I know it has been a minute since I’ve shared a monthly favorites with HM readers. But, I just can’t avoid it any longer; there are a *ton* of new things I have really been loving lately that I need to share with my readers.

Besides Prince Harry’s royal engagement (eep!), I put together a post on everything else I’ve been obsessing over this month (hint: there’s a ton from Sephora’s VIB sale). Now excuse me while I go scroll through Meghan Markle boards on Pinterest…

Fiorucci: By now everyone on here knows my obsession with Devon Carlson, one of the designers behind Wildflower Cases. Through her I’ve discovered some of my favorite people, places and things (like Girl At The White Horse, an L.A. bar). Arguably the coolest, though, is Fiorucci, an Italian label that mixes Dolce Vita luxury with British street style.

Back and better than ever, Fiorucci is one of the most unique labels on the market today–and it has such a rich history. As an Italian girl myself, I quickly fell in love with Fiorucci, but held out until Black Friday to order a few things from their site. To me, their pieces are casual, yet structured, with the perfect amount of sexy for everyday life.

Unlike a lot of other high-end labels, Fiorucci creates pieces I actually want to wear and that I can feel like myself in. I’ll most likely end up creating a lookbook (or two!) focusing on the pieces I bought, but for now I’ll link my favorites here, here and here.

Neisy Bra by Are You Am I: I picked this bra up at the AYAI showroom in Downtown Los Angeles last month, and I have barely taken it off since. Like everything from Are You Am I, this piece fits beautifully; it’s seriously like second skin.

And not only is it comfortable, it looks the part, too. Comfortable bras that are also pretty are super hard to come by–especially when you have a bigger chest. Its thick strips complement the thin rib detail on the cup portion (while providing a little extra support), and it has a gorgeous gold clasp detail on the back.

Unfortunately, this baby is out of stock. But, you can’t go wrong with anything from AYAI. I Promise 😉

Bali Body Shimmering Body Oil: You guys already know how much I love Bali Body’s skincare range; while I can’t make it through the summer months without their Watermelon Tanning Oil SPF 6, their BB Cream is my holy grail year-round.

Just in time for the holidays the Aussie cult-favorite brand debut their Shimmering Body Oil, and it definitely delivers. Unlike their tanning oils, though, Shimmering Body Oil is meant to be worn with *or without* the sun.

It instantly bronzes the skin while giving you a shimmering (duh!) golden glow. And because it’s from BB, it’s insanely nourishing, moisturizing and smells amazing–even better than their original coconut body oil in my opinion.

I love using it on top of–or sometimes instead of–BB’s Bronzing Lotion for that fresh-from-vacay look anytime, anywhere. Shimmering Body Oil, balibody.co

Too Faced Melted Liquified Lipstick in Chihuahua: Ever since I picked up MAC’s Persistence over the summer, I’ve been loving a bold nude lip. Too Faced’s Melted formula has been a favorite of mine for more than two years, so during Sephora’s VIB sale I picked up this shade.

Chihuahua is the perfect match for nearly any eye look, and this high-impact formula can’t be beat: it provides a glossy shine without sacrificing bold color payoff.

Unlike other liquid lipsticks, there’s no need to babysit this formula all day (or night!) long. And because it feels hydrating, lightweight and comfortable, has been my go-to lip color all month long–I even wore it on Thanksgiving! $21, sephora.com

MAC Cosmetics Frost Lipstick in Pink, You Think?: While Chihuahua has been my everyday lip, MAC’s Pink, You Think? has been my go-to for special occasions.

I ventured to L.A. twice in November, and I always love experimenting with fun colors when I’m out there (more so than when I am home on the East Coast). So, this lippie came along for the ride both times.

When I wore this hot neon pink lipstick (with blue pearlescent undertones) for the first time, I paired it with a gray cat-eye look. And the second time I went for a semi-coordinating pearlescent pink eye look. On both occasions, though, this lip color was a hit.

The neon pink hue is stunning, and it doesn’t look weird when it starts to disappear; on me it fades into a sun-kissed coral color. I never see this shade going out of style. $17.50, maccosmetics.com

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask: This was another Sephora VIB sale purchase. After hearing a ton of my fellow Glossier Reps gush about this product, I finally gave into the temptation (couldn’t resist that 20-percent off deal).

I was a little hesitant at first because my skin can be pretty sensitive, but figured with the discount and Sephora’s killer return policy, the risk was minimal.

Not only does it smell amazing, it actually gets the job done! As I’ve gotten older, I noticed my skin (which is normally on the oily side) gets a little dry and somewhat irritated during the colder months. So, I need something extra in my routine to keep my complexion hydrated this time of year.

Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer is great after cleansing, toning and serum-ing, but Watermelon Glow definitely gives my skin that boost it needs before bedtime. $45, sephora.com

Ouai Hair Oil: If you read one of my previous posts, you know I also *finally* tried a few products from the Ouai during Sephora’s VIB sale. While I love everything I picked up, Hair Oil is the stand-out product for me; I find myself reaching for this guy nearly every day.

The nourishing blend of ingredients protects hair from heat damage while mending split ends. And for me, one pump is enough to tame the fly-aways around my face–the best part? I no longer need heat tools to do that!

I’ll also apply Hair Oil to dry tresses before bed to help strengthen my hair overnight. $28, sephora.com

The Fashion Law (website): I’ve been super busy wrapping up my thesis proposal, so I haven’t had too much time to read for pure pleasure. Thankfully, I love my field of research, especially when it gives me the chance to catch up on The Fashion Law, one of my favorite sites for several years now.

TFL has always been my go-to for keeping up with the industry. But more importantly, it was a huge influence in selecting my research topic.

While big names like Vogue and Marie Claire focus heavily on celebrity and pop culture-related content, TFL provides meaningful, in-depth pieces on the industry’s law and business–and it’s still fun to read. The more I learn about the industry, the more I can appreciate that.

Because TFL has been such a big part of my life lately, I decided to include it in my favorites this month even though I’ve been keeping up with it since 2014.

Honorable mentions: Wowder in Light/Medium by Glossier, Daily Oil Wash by Glossier, Match Stix Matte Skinstick in Mocha by Fenty Beauty, Bronzing Lotion by Bali Body, kirakira+ (iPhone app), Sweatsuit in Camel Khaki by Danielle Guizio NY

With Thanksgiving behind us, it’s time to get a leg up on our holiday shopping! And while Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals tempt us to consume, consume, consume, we must make conscious decisions about which retailers to support.

Shopping is necessary this time of year, so being a consumer is unavoidable. After all, we need gifts for our loved ones, and it *is* O.K. to treat yourself to something you’ve been eyeing once in a while. However, @bonfirebeachkids shared an important message via Instagram last week:

Every purchase you make sends a message. And for every great point about what we [as brands and retailers] are doing to help the planet and the people building our goods, there is a valid counter point. Everyone is a critic, but very few are taking accountability for our actions. Here’s what I believe – Every one of you is going to shop anyway. Whether for yourself, or for others. So shop with your heart, and make buying decisions you believe in…PLEASE [GO] SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL NEIGHBORHOOD RETAILERS. Because if you don’t, they aren’t going to be around much longer! But whatever you do, buy what you believe in and GIVE BACK to charities and those in need along the way. Be thankful we live in a world where we actually have all the options that we do, and follow the path that feels right for you.

This is advice all shoppers can (and should!) take to heart this holiday season. That being said, I rounded up quite a few products–in all price ranges–from amazing brands that I love and trust. And because these brands are so careful to craft their products, these are gifts you’ll *actually* looove to give (and receive)!

Similarly, giving back to our communities as a whole is just as important as buying gifts for our loved ones this season. One thing that holds me back, however, is not being able to trust 100 percent of charities out there.

Although it flat-out sucks we have to be careful when choosing a charity, there are quite a few out there that have rightfully earned a bad reputation. So, I added info on four of my favorite charities to this his-and-hers holiday gift guide!

Happy shopping! Be sure to leave your favorite holiday gifts (to give and receive), as well as your favorite charities, in the comments below. Xoxo

This time of year is about giving back to your community and to charities close to your heart. For the past several years I’ve supported Kelsey’s CHRISTmas. Kelsey and I met during our undergraduate studies at West Virginia University and became fast friends.

After losing her older sister to leukemia, the med student launched her namesake charity to make the holidays brighter for the children (and the ICU staff!) of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Kelsey’s CHRISTmas, which is in its 11th year, raises more than $20,000 annually. In the years to come, Kelsey hopes to bring her CHRISTmas to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Growing up with a father who works in tech, I’ve always been computer-savvy. But, it wasn’t until recently I discovered all girls (and women!) are not so lucky. That’s why I love Girls Who Code, an organization that inspires, educates and equips girls for careers in STEM fields. Visit the organization’s website to learn more and to make a donation.

After a semester-long project that focused on food access problems and solutions, I fell in love with Feeding America. This organization helps resolve hunger in the U.S. via 60,000 food banks and meal programs across the country. Together, they provide healthy, nourishing foods to millions of hungry Americans. The holidays in America would be nothing without those who fight daily for our safety and freedom. As 1 in 3 military vets suffers from PTSD, supporting our troops is necessary. Wounded Warrior Project is a trustworthy charity that cares for America’s bravest. Click here to support this organization.
